From Concern to Resolution: Supporting a Jewish Family in Albuquerque Public Schools

A Jewish parent in Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) reached out to JCRC-NM after her son’s teacher displayed a political poster in the classroom expressing personal views on the Gaza situation. The parent turned to JCRC-NM for support. JCRC-NM promptly engaged, connecting her with the appropriate APS leadership and clearly articulating the broader implications of such messaging in a classroom setting, particularly its impact on Jewish students’ sense of safety and belonging.

"I was frustrated and hugely disappointed with the principal for allowing the political poster to stay in the classroom after we expressed our concerns. I was encouraged to reach out to the JCRC-NM. Juan Dircie replied to me immediately and knew to contact the APS Office of Equity and Engagement. They handled the matter within days, removing the poster due to its violation of the APS policy of political neutrality for equality and safety for all.

We are so thankful for JCRC-NM and their community activism and professionalism."
