The Jewish Community Relations Coalition of New Mexico (JCRC-NM) is deeply saddened by the tragic shooting at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., which claimed the lives of two staff members from the Israeli Embassy. We extend our deepest condolences to their families, to the Embassy of Israel, and to the broader Jewish community affected by this horrific act.
Although details continue to emerge, this attack appears to be yet another manifestation of the dangerous and escalating wave of antisemitism, occurring in a climate of relentless hostility toward Jewish communities both globally and here in the United States. Since October 7th,2023 we have witnessed a disturbing pattern: Jewish students physically assaulted on college campuses, individuals harassed enroute to synagogue, and Jewish-owned businesses and institutions targeted with threats and vandalism—none of which can be dismissed as isolated incidents. This is not only a tragedy for the Jewish community—it is an affront to the values that define us as a nation. An attack like this, targeting individuals at a museum dedicated to preserving and sharing Jewish history, is not just an act of antisemitism. It is, ultimately, an attack on America itself and the democratic ideals it represents: freedom of religion, dignity, and safety for all people. We must recognize that when hate is allowed to take root—whether through violence or rhetoric—it threatens the very foundation of our shared society.
This is a moment for unity, clarity, and action. It is time for all Americans—of every faith, background, and belief—to say together: Antisemitism has no place in our society. We urge our civic, religious, academic, and political leaders both nationally and in the state of New Mexico, to join in forcefully rejecting hate and working together to safeguard our communities.
JCRC-NM will continue to stand firm against antisemitism and all forms of bigotry, and we will remain steadfast in our efforts to promote dignity and understanding.
