Antibodies: The Body’s Natural Defense System

Antibodies are specialized proteins produced by the immune system to identify and neutralize harmful invaders such as bacteria, viruses, and toxins. Scientifically known as Immunoglobulins, these molecules play a critical role in protecting the body from infections and diseases.


The production of antibodies is carried out by a type of white blood cell called B lymphocytes. When the body encounters a foreign substance, known as an antigen, the immune system triggers these cells to produce antibodies that specifically bind to that antigen. This binding process helps in marking the harmful substance for destruction or directly neutralizing it.


There are five main types of antibodies, each with a unique function. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most abundant and provides long-term protection.
